Knowing Thy Self

Take a memory tour from genesis to existence and come back again to the moment you are now breathing in. If I ask you : Have you ever asked yourself 'Do I Know Myself?' the answers will vary, because while most people are curious in knowing themselves, a lot more aren't. It is okay to be in either group. Believe me, its never too late to get to know your self and no earlier time is too early. Knowing thy (your) self is a process and it cannot be hurried. Taking one's own time, one aspect at a time, one characteristic that you will define yourself with... a little more of deeper diving into your core, to know yourself more!

This blog will not help you in knowing yourself. Answer to 'why?' is found in the mirror. The individual there is the one who knows yourself more than anyone else. However, I'm writing this because I wish to encourage you to take this journey with Your Self.

Every process begins with a step; here's the first one I would like to introduce, self-awareness; self-focused attention or knowledge. The more you know about yourself, the more you will know yourself. The key is in being honest. Be genuinely involved in this process of self exploration. If I am to acknowledge the positive as well as negative aspects of my personality, then it offers me a chance to put in efforts in being a better version of myself by working on what is already present. When this is channeled to have better understanding of oneself: one's thoughts, emotions and behavior; it is termed as self-analysis. When we go closer to our 'self', there will be times when we won't appreciate certain aspects that make up our existence. One may want to be braver, others may want to be more kind, less angry, more confident, less stubborn, strong, happier, healthy, lively; infinitely! So, let's not forget about self-acceptance, which is essential to appreciate our strengths and weaknesses. So what if I can't bake well? I make excellent tacos!

If you happen to read Gordon Allport's trait theory, you will understand that he divided personality traits into three types, namely: Cardinal traits; the powerful traits that dominate and shape individual's behavior, Central traits; the general characteristics present in every individual in varying degree, and Secondary traits; which are not consistent, but plentiful and present at specific circumstances. Now place your personality traits into these three boxes and it will give a slightly clear picture. It is good to realize that one doesn't know oneself fully and nor do what others know of the person is always true. What matters is the interest that you choose to invest in yourself to discover your real self.

If your path of living gets you closer to what you love the most, the aspects that keep the passion in you alive and at the end of the day you are closer to where you feel most alive; that my friend is what keeps us going.

I wish to make what's coming, stand out from what's been addressed before. This is something that has helped me stand again at the times I saw myself fallen; Self love! I am sorry if you ever met someone who called you 'selfish' because you loved yourself. Well, here's a thing: love is one of the purest emotions and the one who loves his/her self knows how to love others. Self love is what helps us in having standards of the kind of life we wish to live, and we lead with the same self love for greater pursuits that involve well-being of oneself and others around. May self-love facilitate your journey of rising...

I have always believed in having an insight into what I am as a person, knowing what makes me happy, being aware of my weaknesses, facing my fears, evolving, learning everyday from every experience and the life I am living. Might sound like a task, but I know not any other way.

I've come to love my life by being closer to myself. The beauty of life unfolds and multiplies itself when we form bonds with other personalities. But if it starts with you, the more graceful it will be.

This is where the article ends, and your journey begins. Make yourself proud!

With loads of love, J.

Commitment & Vulnerability

There are waves around me and you too are a part of some ocean. One need not be in the actual waters but the waves hit. The waves of competition, pressure, procrastination, boredom, lack of happiness, doubts, trust issues, unfulfilled expectations, lack of communication and lost courage. These all are the waves that affect us negatively. But look into the wider sea and you will see the waves of strength, courage, resilience, happiness, success and well-being. Get into the boat of self-confidence and drive by efforts. That's pretty much you need to get started!  Commitment and Vulnerability may seem like poles that seldom meet. But here I present them as sides of one coin. Dictionary definition of Commitment says; its a promise to be loyal to someone or something. While Vulnerability is defined as the quality or state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally. I believe in two forms of commitment & vulnerability; to s...

The firsts & The lasts

Do you recall the first time you met someone special? The first time you ate your favourite food? The first climb on the mountain? That very first wave which came running to you? First attempt at making chicken biryani? First round tortilla? First time you drove? First tight hug! First kiss! First time you got that code right (and every time you do, my beloved software engineers)! First research paper presentation! First solo trip! That solo visit to a restaurant! First performance! First of anything that strikes your mind RIGHT NOW!! The firsts are firsts, indeed! The firsts of anything and anyone; hold a space in our hearts. They become the memories of a beginning. I even cherish the first conversation with some of my people; the date in the calendar marks the feelings and holds nostalgia of that event. Firsts often signify how one initiates, overcomes, grabs the courage, and has built oneself to that very moment; a transformed entity.  Firsts are what one gets to keep in a memor...
